<image:caption>Scutching Knife 2023 22.5”x6”, tulip poplar, walnut oil, cinnamon, wax This scutching knife was made for the weaver and textile artist, Allie Dudley. The design is based on historical Scandinavian scutching knives with an aim to make the knife more contemporary. This is used as one of the final steps of processing flax into linen. Carved with hand tools, adorned with chip carving and kolrosing.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Greenwood/Decorative Carving - Spice Platform</image:title>
<image:caption>Spice Platform 2023 “10 x 8” Basswood, milk paint, walnut oil, wax I recently started getting a little obsessed with the Scandinavian style of decorative carving. It is a culmination of multiple interests finally coalescing into practice. I started reading a book by Harley Refsal where he talks about the peasant use of folk art, and the decoration of everyday common objects. Instead of waiting around to have something to carve ornately, I looked around my home and tried to identify what could use some beautification. This is a slab of wood we keep on top of our toaster oven to lay spice containers on when we cook. Salt, pepper, garlic, etc. The wood keeps the heat from the toaster oven from melting or burning any of the containers, a perfect candidate for a little folk art spruce up. I’d like to think this piece showing up in a thrift store after I’m gone, and someone wondering what the hell it was used/made for.</image:caption>
